Regular checkpoints for your BMW motorcycle

I don’t remember who sent me this list, but I liked the idea and have modified it somewhat.  

This list is only general and may differ according to your year and model.  

Keep a log book of all work performed and items needing attention. 

Weekly

TIRE PRESSURE (33-35 PSI FRONT AND REAR)

Monthly

TIRE TREAD DEPTH (FRONT, at least 1/2 original tread depth, REAR, at least 1 mm)

CHECK FOR LEAKS IN ALL OIL-CONTAINING AREAS

CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL

CHECK SHOCKS FOR PROPER TRAVEL

CHECK FORKS FOR SMOOTH OPERATION (telescopic)

CHECK ALL LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS and HORN

EVERY 3000-4000 MILES

CHANGE OIL AND FILTER on the /5 and later.  You have no filter on the /2, so change the oil often.

CLEAN ENGINE AND SUMP FINS, AS NEEDED

LUBE CENTER AND SIDE STAND PIVOT POINTS

LUBE SWING ARM PIVOT

SERVICE BATTERY

SERVICE GEARBOX OIL

CHECK FINAL DRIVE LEVEL

CLEAN OR REPLACE THE AIR FILTER

CHECK THE CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT

ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE

CHECK SPARK PLUGS GAP

CHECK THE POINTS GAP AND TIMING AND LUBE CAM

INSPECT CARBURETORS AND FUEL LINE

INSPECT BRAKES

CHECK FOR PARTS THAT WANT TO FALL OFF

6000-8000 MILES

 

PERFORM 3000-4000 MILE CHECK AGAIN

CHANGE GEARBOX OIL

CLEAN FUEL PETCOCK FILTERS (INSIDE THE FUEL TANK)

LUBE WHEEL BEARINGS, or at every tire change

EVERY SIX MONTHS

CHECK/LUBE CONTROLS AND CABLES 

YEARLY

CHANGE DRIVE SHAFT OIL

CHANGE FINAL DRIVE OIL

CHECK STEERING HEAD BEARINGS AND ADJUST
