My younger brother, Don, and his son, Julio, went backpacking in the
Sierras
near Yosemite. After a couple of days Don discovered his knee was causing
some trouble. He asked me to pick them up near Sonora. The next day
we visited Sacramento, Ca. the state capitol. Here are some photos.

Julio Ausherman, 14, visiting the
Assembly room at the
capitol.

Don and Julio at one of the very fancy stairways.

Julio at the Senate room.

Don at another ornate stairway.

The front of the beautiful building.

Don and Julio at the wonderful
train museum.
San Francisco, CA.

Visiting one of the well known Gay areas of San Francisco,
"The Castro."

Julio at the birth place of the
Hippy movement in the late
60s.

The Pacific Ocean with the famous old "Cliff House" restaurant
in the background.

The bottom of
Lombard Street, the crookedest street in the
world.

One of the houses on the crooked part of Lombard St.

Julio found his yo-yo more interesting than Lombard St.

Fisherman's Wharf

A few of the many yachts.

Is this a recent escapee from this famous institution,
Alcatraz.

Don was only in San Francisco a few hours and became a
street
performer. He is shaking his booty here.

Those batons are on fire, is he an arsonist too?

Little boys shouldn't play with fire.

The female juggler is balancing on that pole, held by two
strong guys and juggling the lit batons.

You can't tell from this fuzzy photo, but Don is passing a hat
to collect money. He wasn't THAT good. In only a few hours a decent
self respecting mid-western man is reduced to begging on the streets of San Francisco.
Locke, CA.
The last day of their visit we had some time, so we decided to visit this
area. Locke
is a town built for Chinese labors more than 100 years ago. It is the last
remaining town like it. The rest of them burned down. Locke is only 20 miles
from our home in Galt.

One of the well known establishments in Locke is
Al the Wops
restaurant. That link is a bit racy. While politically incorrect, the name is well known and it is
proudly kept. It is a fair steak house with a lot of attitude.

Inside one can see an interesting tradition. People take a dollar
bill, stick a thumb tack into it and wrap it around a weight. It is then
thrown up against the ceiling. It may stick and the weight comes falling
down. The result is a "lot" of money stuck to the ceiling over that large
area. They have to clean it off periodically to make room for more money.
You can see the bills as those small items around Julio's head.

Just another view of the few art galleries and shops.

Here is a view between the buildings. They are all wood
frame and quite dilapidated and out of plumb. This photo does not do
it justice.

Here is Julio on
Staten Island. NO, not New York, but an island in the
California Delta area.

Note by Don's brother, Duane; I wrote this page just to
keep the record straight. This is my proof of Don and Julio's activity
while in California in the summer of 2005. Any rumors of scandals etc are
patently false. There is no evidence. Blood is thicker than water.
Even if I "knew something" do you really think I would tell? Besides, Don
is an upstanding member of his community and church. That is my story and
I am sticking with it.
