Adjusting steering bearings requires great sensitivity on the part of the mechanic. BMW printed the friction values of the bearings. This could be measured with a torsion gauge and that would give one an objective number. The idea was to make it easier for a non-mechanic to do the job correctly.
All of our employees, except the bookkeeper, were trained to do the job, so we had no use for such a tool. Besides, there were too many variables to consider, such as temperature, the viscosity of the grease, tension caused by the control cables and wiring. Except for the seal ring, this bulletin was just a waste of time.
